Currencies of the World

The table below lists the names of the currencies and subcurrencies in use in nearly 200 countries and territories around the world. Included are the commonly used symbols for each currency. Coun-tries are listed alphabetically. Many currencies are "soft," meaning they are either legally inconvert-ible, or simply undesirable because they are not very stable. The currencies most often referred to as "hard" currencies are the U.S. dollar, the Canadian dollar, the Japanese yen, the British pound sterling, the German mark, the French franc, the Swiss franc, the Italian lira, and the Dutch guilder. These currencies are easily convertible world-wide.

Up-to-date information on exchange rates, as well as on changes in the type of currency in use are available from a variety of sources. In your local area, call a major bank and ask for the foreign ex-change department, or check the business section of the a major newspaper for a table of foreign ex-change. Another source is Thomas Cook Currency Services; In USA Tel: [1] (212) 883-0400.

The Wall Street Journal publishes the most com-plete table of foreign exchange rates against the dollar ("World Value of the Dollar") in its Monday edition, using Bank of America, Global Trading as its source. It also publishes a daily table of currency trading, with fewer currencies listed, and "Key Cur-rency Cross Rates," which shows the relationships between nine hard currencies.

Other Internet sites with currency information in-clude "Currencies of the World" at URL http://pacific.commerce.ubc.ca/trade/currencies.html; the United Nations "Operational Rates of Exchange" at URL gopher://gopher.undp.org/00/uncurr/exch_ rates; "Pacific Exchange Rate Service" at www.pacific.commerce.ubc.ca/xr/; "The Currency Site" (historical tables, current rates and forecasts) at www.oanda.com/; and "Exchange Rates" (rates provided by the International Monetary Fund) at www.imf.org/external/np/tre/sdr/sdr.html.

The information given here is current as of January 2000.
